Silver Thread Communities is the only senior living community in the Triangle owned and operated by veterans. VA benefits, including Aid & Attendance, are welcomed here. You served. We see that. And we take it seriously.
A lot of senior living communities say they welcome Veterans. We were built by one. That difference shows up every day — in how we run this place, how we treat Residents, and what we ask of ourselves.
We build a personalized approach around each Resident. Cambridge Hills for assisted living and memory care. Twin Rivers for independent living. We meet you where you are.
Military service shapes a person. Our staff knows that. You won't be treated like a case file or a room number here. You'll be known by name and treated with the respect you've earned. Think of us as your "Life Battle Buddy."
Cambridge Hills offers assisted living and a 38-bed memory care neighborhood. Twin Rivers is our independent living community — active and social, walkable in the heart of Chatham County.
Our independent living option is exactly that — independent. A yard you can call yours. Parking right outside your door. A front porch, quiet neighbors, and a rural setting that actually feels rural. For Veterans who've earned the right to live on their own terms, The Nook delivers with piece of mind that you're part of our Family.
If you or your spouse served, there are benefits that can help pay for senior living. Most Veterans don’t know they have them. We can connect you with resources to help you use these benefits.
Aid & Attendance is a VA pension benefit available to wartime Veterans and their surviving spouses who need help with daily activities. It’s not a loan, it’s not a charity; it’s a benefit you earned.
Our team is well-connected in the Veteran community and can help you find the resources you need to understand and apply for benefits.
Not sure if you qualify? Patriot Angels can help.
Navigating the VA benefits process (especially Aid & Attendance) can feel overwhelming. Patriot Angels is a team of accredited claims agents who specialize in helping veterans and surviving spouses get approved for the benefits they’ve earned. They handle the paperwork, the appeals, and the process so you’re not figuring it out alone.
We recommend them to families who aren’t sure where to start. Call Mike and he can point you in the right direction.
When you call Silver Thread, you reach someone who has been where you are. Our leadership team includes two Navy veterans with a combined 56 years of service — they know the paperwork, they know the VA, and they know what it means to transition into this chapter of life.
Executive Director · Silver Thread Communities
Mike served for 34 years. He knows what it means to complete a mission, look after the people in your unit, and leave no one behind.
He also knows VA paperwork. He’s done it. He’s helped other Veterans do it. When you call him, you’re not getting a call center, you’re getting a Veteran who has been in your position and wants to help you figure out your next step.
Owner · Silver Thread Communities
Ray put in 22 years and retired as a Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate — one of the Navy’s most demanding enlisted ratings. He’s the kind of person who got things done, kept things running, and looked out for everyone under his watch.
He’ll be the first to tell you he’s not the one with all the gold on his sleeve. But he’s the one who’s been in the trenches, navigated veteran bureaucracy firsthand, and knows how to cut through the noise to get answers.
This isn't a checklist. It's your life, and it should feel that way. Here's what's included for every Resident.
Three chef-prepared meals daily in a dining room where people know your name. No cafeteria trays.
Help with daily living — dressing, hygiene, mobility — with the quiet dignity that makes you feel supported, not watched.
Medication reminders and management included. You don't have to track it, and neither does your family.
Housekeeping and laundry taken care of so you spend your time on what matters.
We coordinate driving residents to medical appointments including the Durham VA Health Care System.
Social events, recreational activities including giving our Veterans the recognition they deserve throughout the year, and military holiday celebrations.
Military service is part of who you are. We don’t forget that. At Silver Thread, we recognize each Resident’s branch of service.
Veterans are not just residents here. They are respected, valued members of our community – people who served, and who deserve to be served in return. As a neighbor, not just a number.
We celebrate military holidays and Veterans’ moments throughout the year. Not as a checkbox — as a genuine expression of respect of the people who live here.
